Sister Mary Mechtidle (Mary Ellen) Murphy was my 3x Great Aunt on my father’s side. She was born on March 4, 1858 in Taunton, Massachusetts to Dr. Joseph Murphy and Mary Frances (Briggs) Murphy. Mary Ellen was the oldest of eight children.
On April 22, 1881 at the age of 23 Mary Ellen entered the Sisters of Mercy in Brooklyn New York. On November 3rd of that same year she received her habit and the name Mary Mechtilde, 21 days later professed her vows.
The Sisters of Mercy archives had a record of the day of her death, March 10, 1922:
“At ten o’clock this mroning, our poor, dear Sister Mary Mechtilde dropped dead at the Community Room door.
She had been to Confession yesterday. She was at Mass and Holy Communion this morning. She had just come up from the chapel where she had been praying for a considerable time.
Father Cherry came almost instantly and anointed her.
Poor soul! She had been always an excellent Religious, and though her death was so sudden, all realized she was ready. “
The archives also gave me a great find. A picture!
