John Frances Gillon was my first cousin 3x removed. He was born on the 21st of September 1896 in Taunton, Massachusetts to John Benedict Gillon and Agnes Louise Murphy. John was the second of 5 children, however only himself and two sisters lived to adulthood. His sisters were Martha Josephine Mary Gillon and Clare M Gillon. Joseph M Gillon was born in 1900 and passed in 1906 and there was an unnamed Gillon who was born and passed in 1903.
John attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1916 and later qualified for duty in submarines. Following his qualifying as a naval aviator, he served in the aircraft squadrons of the scouting force.
John married Eileen Campbell and had two children Marie Barbara Gillon and Nancy Gillon.
In June of 1936 he was the Commander in charge of the Scouting Squadron VS-2B.
On June 7, 1937 he lost his life in the crash of a plane off the Hawaiian Islands while attached to the aircraft carrier Saratoga during the war games.
