Dr. Joseph Briggs Murphy, son of the late Dr. Joseph Murphy and Mary (Briggs) Murphy succumbed to a sudden heart attack Sunday at his summer home in Falmouth Heights. He was the last surviving member of a family of three brothers and three sisters. Upon his graduation from College Sainte Marie in Montreal and Harvard Medical School, class of 1883, he was appointed to the Boston City Hospital, and later served at the Saint Elizabeth and Carney Hospitals in Boston. He married Emily F. Bliss who also became a physician and for more than 50 years both were active in the practice of medicine in Taunton. He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Aside from his distinguished medical career, he will be remembered by many for his proficiency as a linguist-he spoke six languages fluently- and for his enthusiasm of outdoor sports. He was an unusually fine skater and even in recent winters has been a familiar figure on the ice on local ponds. He was one of the founders of, and a director for a period, of the East Taunton street railroad. Dr. Murphy is survived by a son, Dr. Joseph L. Murphy, a daughter Miss Maydelle Murphy, city librarian and five grandsons. Funeral services will occur at his late home 33 Summer Street on Wednesday at 8 followed by a solemn requiem mass in St. Mary’s Church at 9.

She was admitted to the Hospital on October 17, as a result of a fracture, suffered from a fall. At times her condition improved, but this morning she weakened considerably and death came shortly before noon. Dr. Emily F. Murphy was singly honored a few years ago by being elected as an outstanding woman by the Business and Professional Woman’s Club of this city due to her long service as a practicing physician and the interest which she took in the cause of aiding those suffering from sickness. Dr, Murphy was born in Taunton Oct 16, 1859, the daughter of Shubael P. Bliss and Alminda Lincoln Bliss. The story in the family includes the note that my grandfather was also an avid golfer. He never hit a ball as far as 200 yards but every shot was in the center of the fairway. It was told that he played 18 holes on the day he died, beat his friend who he had never beat before, came home, sat in a chair and passed on with a smile on his face.
